Helpful advice while waiting for your home to close.
Contact your lender to ensure all items needed for the loan are in place.
Schedule your home inspection.
Contact insurance companies to find out rates & let them know your new address.
Don’t forget about your beloved pets & the items needed for a safe transition to the new home.
Obtain packing materials and begin packing things you do not currently need. Remember to book your moving company, they fill up fast!
Change your address with the post office, credit card companies, magazine subscriptions, friends and family, etc.
Change address delivery for landscaping & irrigation services.
Notify the utility companies for a change of address & shutting down of current address.

Register Children for schools/daycare or notify the district of your new address.
(See the list provided in the Community Information page)
WHAT NOT TO DO WHILE WAITING:
Day of Close! Do a final walk of the home you are buying to ensure all things found on previous walk and inspection items have been completed. Make sure all receipts are supplied it it applies to inspection items and it was part of your contract.
Keep valuables and important documents with you.
Once your house is empty – go through and double check closets, cabinets, etc to make sure you did not leave anything behind. Remember your shed, garage & storage areas of your basement.
Make sure your pets and small children are taken care of while the moving truck is being loaded.
Give the house a final clean up or make sure your cleaning crew has done a good job for the new owners.
After close take your closing statement to the post office if you have a cluster box. You will need this to get your new key.
Once you are moved into the new home!Place Your Warranty Book in a safe place and make it easy to get to should you need it. Familiarize your self with the policies of how to report issues or ask questions.
Register any extended warranties you might need. Usually this includes, HVAC, basement water proofing, etc…
If you are moving into Iowa from out of state be sure register your car & change your driver’s license to avoid penalties.
Send our your change of addresses to family, friends, doctors, etc…
Remember to sign up for Homestead at the county court house. Wait about a week for the deed to be rerecorded and make sure you do it before the end of June or you have to wait another year to get the benefit. (You can still apply after June but the benefit will not start until the new year)
